I am approaching graduation and my posts keep getting further and further apart. I have had some time to do some drawings for the Atomic Sketch Event. You can add them as a friend on Facebook (where I stole these photos from) or you can check out their blog.
A bunch of everyone is in this show at Columbia's Hokin Gallery right now. I have 2 posters in it myself. I don't have a list of everyone who is participating so I wont even try to name people in fear of leaving someone out. You should just go take a look, it's some amazing stuff. The opening reception is on thursday. (free food)
This video was made by Andy Burkholder. I like this video alot. It was for a show put on by Andy and Josh Clarfelt at the Happy Collaborators called "The Apartment". That's all I will say, just watch. Andy also has a flickr with a some amazing drawings on it. Josh will have a website soon.

Here are some photos from last months Atomic Sketch Event. You can check out more of them out on their blog (where I stole these from).
If you don't know what Atomic Sketch Event is already let me fill you in. Basically its spur of the moment art. Create, hang, sell all in the same evening. And if you're not an artist you can watch the creative process in the flesh.
ASE asks a panel of artists to come to Evil Olive every month. They pick one featured artist to showcase their work throughout the club. Everyone on the panel draws and hangs their work on the wall for people to buy. They also open the event to anyone who has a pen too. You can just show up even if you're not on the panel and sit down and draw and walk away with some cash in your pocket. Or you could buy beer with it. Or bus fare. Actually, what you do with your money is none of my business.
This month my friend Emmy Star Brown is on the panel. Her work is great and we have recently collaborated. It's going to knock your pumpkin booties off, I swear to god, it's the funkiest thing you will ever see.
I have some paintings for sale, both $75. If you're interested email me at kyleharter@gmail.com
"Another Sunday At The Office" 36" x 11.5" You see, these guys went out to lunch and one thing led to another. And well, its a "dog eat dog/pig" world out there. Everyone is hungry.
SOLD "Don't Forget To Balance Your Eggs " 34" x 8.5" This painting has a lot to do with autumn and the equinox. An old wives' tale says that on the equinoxes, when the Earth is "balanced" and all things are equal, it is possible to balance an egg on one end. The truth is that it is possible to balance an egg on its end any day of the year, provided you have a steady hand.
This is a drawing I did at the coffee shop. I asked Brandon for an adjective, he said, "chunky". That's how spontaneous this drawing is.
My computer would not let me do everything I wanted to do to it. It kept coming up with a prompt that said, "not enough ram" or something. Then when I tried to punch it with my mind, it came up with another prompt that said, "cannot receive imaginary punch, not enough ram". Then I punched the couch with my fist.
Gino Orlandi, a designer, wrote a book about how to sell art online. CHECK IT OUT! But not at your local library, at the links below. Thank you very much.
I'm home for the holiday and with the holidays comes ham and politics. The political topics range from the war, health-care, resource depletion and me not finding a job in 5 months. And the ham topic usually ends with me saying, "no thanks" and them looking at me confused for a second and then realizing I am still on that "crazy meatless diet".
Hamless and political I remembered this video. It came out shortly after that thing that happened with the airplanes and skyscrapers in that eastern US city . It's from the guys at Knife Party and was made in 2002.
I think it still has a point and it shows concern from the rest of the world towards America's dedication too war and its refusal to give up.
The idea of effecting the shit filled world, positively, is something that I would like to make a reality. This video, among other social and political awareness art I have seen in the past few years, came to mind.
The more I thought about all of this "awareness based art/design" that's out there in the world the more my head hurt. Do we really need to be any more aware? Does putting "Buck Fush" on a t-shirt really help change anything? Then I came across this; #18-Awareness-on Stuff White People Like .
I came to the conclusion that awareness is important but action needs to be taken too. Why not do both? Spreading the word or making people aware of a problem is fantastic and if that's all you can do, then great! But I need more. This website seems like a good place to start http://www.areachicago.org/
This is only a conclusion I made and not criticismtowards my peers. And maybe within the next few days it will turn from a conclusion into a resolution.
I asked my friend, Elisa, what she was looking for in a man. She said, "All he needs to do is make me happy, he does not need to poop diamonds or anything". Upon hearing this and remembering my roommate Josh talk about slave labor to mine diamonds. I drew a picture. If you would like to know more about the diamond trade and how messed up it is please go to this link.http://www.dailybruin.ucla.edu/archives/id/23048/
Here's a quote from the article. "Many of these slaves are children kidnapped from their homes and forced to mine diamonds or fight in a rebel army. Warlords frequently slice their arms with knives and fill the open wounds with cocaine and marijuana in order to drug the children into submission."
And another quote from my friend Jona who said, after reading the article, "wow...America is a butthole, I mean really, We Suck."
With the defeat of Proposition 8 in California and other anti-marriage bans enacted in 30 other states, it is up to fair-minded individuals to stop the Religious Right’s crusade of hate. We ask you to join us in fighting the cultural war waged on our families, communities, and hearts.
Our message is simple: Stop H8, Donate $8! We need 8,000 people to donate $8 to our “Stop H8, Donate 8!” campaign before the National Defense of Marriage Act protest rallies on January 10th. After donating, please pass this message along to your friends, coworkers, family and acquaintances. A movement starts with a single step!
All money raised will go to the swift completion and release of our feature film, Fish out of Water, a documentary that tackles the seven Bible verses used to condemn homosexuality and justify marriage discrimination. By using animation to make these dusty and vague verses accessible, Fish out of Water is a necessary ally in helping the LGBTQI community wage their battle for marriage equality.
We plan to bring the film to school yards, doorsteps and street corners everywhere from Appalachia and the Bible belt to the Wild West and Midwest on our 2009 Pink Van Tour. During this nationwide campaign we will screen the film, and distribute accompanying educational materials.
Please join the fight for marriage equality and Stop H8, Donate $8 by visiting: www.fishoutofwaterfilm.com and clicking on the “donate” link.
We also ask you to join us on Saturday, January 10th for the next National Defense of Marriage Act protest rally in your local city. To keep informed on all the latest developments, join our blog: http://fishoutofwaterblog.blogspot.com/
Thank you for your tireless support, courageous minds and eager hearts. In this crucial time in history in the fight for equal rights, it’s not a matter of ability, but action. YES WE WILL change the course of history. YES WE WILL accomplish it together.
Quote by Jona from Jona Hates You blog. "Kyle Harter has a blog. It is where he posts pictures from his art shows and his paintings and stuff. His stuff is really good, and he is really funny, and he wore some tight jeans a while back and they looked really good. Everybody hates him for all that he has, but nobody will come out and say it because they're scared of being Not Cool. So he's pretty much King of the Not Cools. Which is cooler than it sounds because it's born of intimidation, man."
I was walking to the coffee shop last week and a horrible thought entered my head. "What if I were to loose my hands". Practically everything I do is done with my hands. After a horrible ten minute walk, I got to the coffee shop and asked this question to Brandon and Bill. Both Brandon and Bill are musicians, mainly guitar players. We were thinking of instruments you could play without your hands. Tuba? Noooo. Trumpet? Nooooo. Drums? Mehhh.....kind of. Theremin? Yessss! So I said I was going to draw this "handless-theremin-player".
This is what I came up with on the spot. It's called, "he's an amazing therimin player... handless... but amazing none the less"
